What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that fuses with your jawbone. Then a crown or tooth is put on top. This procedure can help preserve the health of your jaw and surrounding teeth compared with dentures or bridges.

A dental implant can last from 15 years up to 25 years, making them the most permanent, reliable solution for dental gaps on the market.
Dental implants come in many forms and can be used for filling a gap for a single tooth, implant-retained bridge, or even a full implant retained denture.

There are many benefits to having a dental implant over a traditional bridge or dentures. You’ll hardly even notice them once they’re in because they function like your teeth!

Other benefits of dental implants include improved speech, durability, comfort and convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Cherry Tree Dental, we’re committed to helping our clients, like you, achieve the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. In order to help you decide if a dental implant could be right for you, we’ve compiled answers to common questions direct from our experts!

If you have a question that isn’t answered below or you simply want more information on dental implants, feel free to give us a call on 01254 202888.

Am I too young/ old to have dental implants?

  • No, dental implants are suitable for adult patients of all ages.

We typically don’t recommend dental implants for children under 18 years because the jaw and bone tissue is still growing and developing.

  • Are there any reasons why I can’t have a dental implant?

  • Yes, during the initial consultation we’ll talk with you about your suitability for this treatment option.

There are a few specific medical cases where implants may not be suitable:

    • If you have an autoimmune disorder
    • If you have diabetes that isn’t under control
    • If you’ve had radiology to the jaw
    • If you are a regular smoker

In these cases, there is a chance your body may reject the titanium implant. We’ll assess your specific situation and help you make a decision based on your circumstances.

  • Can I replace removable dentures with implants?

  • Yes, you can replace removable dentures with implants! Choosing a dental implant is a fantastic long-term solution that will remove the need for adhesives and will feel more like your teeth!

  • How painful is it to have a dental implant fitted?

  • You shouldn’t feel any pain when your dental implant is fitted. You’ll be under local anaesthetic to numb your mouth.

You may encounter some pain or discomfort following the procedure relating to natural bruising and swelling. Some pain is normal and can be alleviated with over-the-counter painkillers.

Most people are able to return to work the day after a procedure.

If you’re experiencing what you would consider an abnormal amount of pain, that isn’t eased by over-the-counter pain killers, call us right away on 01254 202888!

  • How long do dental implants last?

  • About 15 years.

Keep in mind, many dental implants may last longer if they’re properly taken care of!

The durability and usability of dental implants will give them a lifespan much closer to real teeth and are a smart, reliable, and long-term solution to fill any gaps in your smile.

  • How long does the dental implant process take?

  • Dental implants can take anywhere between three and nine months for the process to be complete.

This is a guideline and could be longer if you need any other work done like extractions or bone grafts which will extend that timeline.

During your consultation, we’ll provide you with a timeline based on your specific circumstances.

  • Why will I need a bone graft before I have my implant fitted?

  • Not everyone will need a bone graft.

During your consultation, our dental implant specialist will check to see if you have enough existing jaw bone to support the implant. If you don’t have enough bone, you may need a bone graft.

Our specialist will discuss all available options with you — contact us today!

  • What is the difference between a dental implant and a bridge?

  • The difference is how each the items are fixed, supported and if they will or won’t damage surrounding teeth.

Dental implants are screwed into your jaw bone to hold a new crown (tooth) in place. Your natural teeth will not be harmed or altered to fit a dental implant.

A bridge uses the surrounding teeth as the support for the false tooth or teeth. Your natural teeth may be cut away or altered to support a bridge.

If you have any additional questions feel free to give us a call on 01254 202888.
