Glass Ionomer Fillings
Glass ionomer fillings are tooth-coloured restorations made from a blend of silicate glass powder. They bond directly to the tooth structure and slowly release fluoride over time, helping to strengthen the tooth and reduce the risk of future decay.
We’ve provided plenty of details below, but if you would like to find out more quickly, simply call us on 01254 202888, and we will be happy to discuss it with you over the phone.
How Glass Ionomer Fillings Works?
Glass ionomer fillings are ideal for patients who are at a higher risk of tooth decay or enamel wear. Once placed, the filling gradually releases fluoride, helping to strengthen the surrounding tooth and reduce the risk of future decay. They also provide a natural tooth-coloured appearance, making them a discreet option for visible areas of the mouth. However, because they are less resistant to heavy chewing forces, they are generally not recommended for biting surfaces on back teeth.
Every treatment plan is tailored to the severity of the break, helping restore both the function and appearance of your smile.
Benefits of Glass Ionomer Fillings
-
Continuous Fluoride Release
The fluoride released strengthens and reduces the risk of new decay developing.
-
Chemical Bond
Glass ionomer bonds directly to enamel and dentin, without the need for extensive tooth preparation.
-
Minimal Tooth Removal
Because glass ionomer bonds directly to the tooth, less healthy tooth structure needs to be removed during treatment.
